The Planner II performs a variety of complex current and long-range planning functions including development plan review, administration and enforcement of the Town’s Land Use Code and implementation of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Review and process applications for zoning and land use code compliance
  • Manage and process land use applications including, but not limited to, rezoning, site development plan, conditional uses, variance requests, and subdivision (sketch plan, preliminary plat, final plat) etc.
  • Perform site inspections necessary for compliance with approved plans and initiates actions necessary to correct deficiencies or violations of regulations
  • Assists in enforcing the Town's Land Use Code
  • Conducts research, analysis, and interpretation of technical reports, plans and documents for complex land development projects
  • Prepare and present staff reports to the appropriate hearing entity (Town Council and Planning Commission)
  • Answers questions and provides information to the public on planning and zoning matters
  • Assists with advanced planning revisions, oversight, and implementation of the Comprehensive Plan, Land Use Code and other ordinances
  • Coordinate and participate in regional planning efforts/projects
  • Communicate and work proactively with developers, community organizations, neighborhood associations and agency officials on current or proposed development

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Well-developed knowledge of planning principles and practices
  • Knowledge of personal computers - Proficient in use of personal computers and related software applications specifically: Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written)
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of individuals including supervisors, co-workers, and the public
  • Skilled in performing basic mathematical calculations (statistical, algebraic, or geometric knowledge and ability to apply such knowledge in practical situations)
  • Skilled in handling frequent interruptions and exercise critical judgment
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret manuals, ordinances, written policies and procedures, statutes, rules, regulations, memos, letters, reports, plats, site plans, maps, and legal documents.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Public Administration, Engineering or other professionally appropriate field
  • Three years of professional planner experience. Experience working for a municipality is highly preferable
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) designation preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience with municipal government operations, including: public hearings, special assessment process, bid letting, etc.
  • GIS digital mapping and geospatial analysis knowledge
