Boulder County Community Planning and Permitting  Department is seeking to hire a Planner I. This position is an opportunity to join the Development Review Team in the Community Planning & Permitting Department. The ideal candidate will have the ability communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; relates well to individuals at all levels within and outside the organization; is tactful in contentious situations; possesses the interpersonal skills to adapt to diverse personalities and styles, facilitate group discussions, and make formal presentations; shows composure to be cool under pressure; learns quickly, understands complex processes and procedures, and applies creativity to find solutions; works well in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment, sets and meets deadlines, and performs well with minimal direct supervision; effectively copes with change; shifts gears comfortably and handles uncertainty; is action-oriented and full of energy for challenging tasks. This is an entry level position. 
 
This is a full-time, benefited position, general work hours are Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm. This position will work in Boulder, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is exempt.
 
Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.
 
Hiring Salary Range: $60,756.00 - $64,500.00 Annually
 
Tentative Hiring Timeline:

  • First Round Interviews: Week of July 15th
  • Second Round Interviews: Week of July 22nd
  • Reference Check: Week of July 22nd

Examples of Duties

 

  1. Provide information and assistance to developers, land use professions, and the public regarding a range of planning related matters, often serving as their first point of contact
  2. Research prior development decisions, County policies, and actions applicable to specific requests on land parcels
  3. Conduct pre-application meetings with a wide range of potential applicants – land owners, developers, attorneys, real estate agents – to explain departmental procedures, land use regulations, and County policies, as applicable
  4. Review land use applications for compliance with land use regulations, comprehensive plan goals and objectives, and other applicable regulations and policies
  5. Coordinate referrals and responses concerning land use dockets from other agencies, departments, and divisions
  6. Conduct site visits for assigned land use application reviews
  7. Prepare conditional approvals for reviewed land use applications
  8. Performs related work, as required
  9. May be reassigned during emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of:

 

Bachelor's degree in planning or related field, such as but not limited to landscape architecture, civil engineering, geography, real estate development, or environmental policy or planning, AND One year of professional experience in urban, rural, regional, transportation, parks or community planning, or other related field.

OR 

Bachelor’s degree, with a minimum of nine college credits in planning related coursework AND three years of professional experience in urban, rural, regional, transportation, parks or community planning, or other related field.

Supplemental Information

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master's in Planning or related field.
  • Experience in reviewing land use applications for compliance with applicable codes and policies.
  • Planning experience addressing rural or agricultural concerns and issues.
