As home to the world’s largest outdoor rodeo, Cheyenne Frontier Days—also known as the “Daddy of ’em All” since 1897—Cheyenne is rich in tradition and community spirit.

The Planning and Development Department plays a key role in shaping the city’s future. The department oversees a wide range of functions including current and long-range planning, historic preservation, parks and greenway planning, the metropolitan planning organization, urban renewal, and the downtown development authority. This position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of high-impact planning initiatives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and processing development proposals and applications for zoning, subdivisions, and site development in coordination with internal departments and external agencies.

  • Advising architects, developers, contractors, attorneys, engineers, and the public on development regulations, city standards, and planning procedures.

  • Conducting property inspections for zoning compliance and recommending corrective actions as needed.

  • Preparing reports and presenting recommendations to boards and commissions, including the Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, City Council, and County Commissioners, often requiring attendance at evening or weekend meetings.

  • Assisting with long-range planning projects, including neighborhood and transportation plans, comprehensive plan updates, and historic preservation efforts.

  • Supporting special projects such as grant preparation and management, policy development, and implementation of plan recommendations.

  • Participating in interdepartmental teams, community meetings, and advisory committees, while also conducting research and preparing reports and maps.

Secondary responsibilities may include:

  • Responding to public inquiries and complaints with professionalism and in a timely manner.

  • Maintaining accurate development records and utilizing the City’s permitting software to track applications and approvals.

  • Supporting the Building Division by comparing building plans with approved development permits.

  • Contributing to community development efforts and performing other planning-related duties as assigned.

Cheyenne offers a high quality of life with no state income tax and a cost of living below the national average. The City contributes 14.62% of an employee’s salary to the Wyoming Retirement System, with only a 4% employee contribution. With competitive benefits, meaningful work, and a vibrant community setting, Cheyenne is a great place to live, work, play, and make a lasting impact.
